Para solucionar tal problema, el emperador decidió celebrar el día de su cumpleaños una carrera en la que participarían todos los animales. La carrera consistiría en atravesar un bosque, cruzar un río y recorrer una llanura, decretando que cada uno de los doce primeros animales que alcanzaran la meta sería otorgado en su honor un año con su nombre (doce años, doce animales).
Por aquel entonces la rata y el gato eran buenos amigos por lo que decidieron ayudarse mutuamente pero preocupados por su dificultad para nadar y por sus temores a quedarse dormidos el día de la carrera, ambos pidieron ayuda al buey (porque era muy bondadoso y madrugador). De tal manera que el buey accedió a echarles una mano llevándoles en su espalda el día de la carrera.
Sin embargo, cuando el buey atravesaba el río la rata cayó en la cuenta que el gato, que es un buen corredor, podría llegar el primero a la meta, por eso la rata decidió empujar al gato al agua de forma que en cuanto el buey alcanzó la orilla la rata empezó a correr lo más que pudo hasta la meta ganando la carrera, y llegando el buey en segundo lugar.
Después del buey llegó el tigre (3º), el cuarto puesto fue para el conejo (gracias a su habilidad para brincar de orilla a orilla el río).
El dragón sin duda era el más rápido (ya que podía volar). Pero tuvo que abandonar la carrera ya que se tuvo dirigir al Este a crear lluvia para ayudar a la gente y criaturas de la tierra.
Poco después se oyó en la lejanía al caballo llegar galopando, al que la serpiente dio un susto en la llanura haciéndole caer, de manera que la serpiente ocupó el 6º lugar y el caballo el 7º. Seguidos de estos, aparecieron la cabra, el mono y el gallo, los cuales compartieron el tronco de un árbol para atravesar el río.
El perro llegó el undécimo y finalmente la última posición fue para el cerdo.

Desde entonces a los gatos les gusta atrapar ratas y ratones para comérselos.
